A Wrinkle in Time
by Madeleine L’Engle
Adapted for the stage by Ron Reed
Role: Mrs. Whatsit | Director: Jeany Van Meltebeke | Company: Rosebud School of the Arts
Mrs. Whatsit was a powerful and delightful character to play. I loved using my lower resonance for this role. When my voice dropped into this character, I felt grounded. I felt I found her wisdom, joy, and fearlessness through working first from my voice. Then, I used that to discover her physicality of grace and frumpiness which she seemed to carry all at once. Although it was difficult to relate personally to a used-to-be star who was now a centaur-like winged being, I did relate to her uniqueness and her desire for everyone to be full of light instead of darkness. We were more similar than I expected when I initially read the script, and it was great to find these connections and desires inside myself even in this crazy supernatural world.
“Emily was a lovable Mrs. Whatsit; delightful and strong. I appreciated her leadership in picking up the energy of the play whenever she spoke. She carried a big line load so this was essential for the pace and clarity of our show.” - Jeany Snider (Director)
“Emily, I enjoyed your bold physicality and confidence both as an ensemble member and as Mrs. Whatsit. Your reveal as a heavenly winged creature was beautiful and unapologetic, and a highlight of the show.” - Kelsey Krogman (Acting Coach)
“She would drop into her lower resonance and communicate with power and energy and heart…the audience felt in good hands with you.” - Jeany Snider (Director)
