The Canadian Badlands Passion Play
Assistant Director (2018 & 2019) | Intern Director (2016 & 2017) | Company: Passion Play Society
I truly found my love for directing while attending York University and specializing in devised theatre. Since then, I have tried to learn and experience directing as much as possible. In 2016, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime - to be the Intern Director of the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. I was also the Intern Director for their 2017 season. In their 2018 and 2019 season, I was the Assistant Director.
This show tells the story of Jesus Christ; so through my time directing The Canadian Badlands Passion Play, I have learned how to direct a show with live animals such as birds, sheep, horses and even a donkey. I learned about using water on stage.
I learned about proper rigging while dropping a man from a balcony and yes, I also learned how to theatrically and safely perform a crucifixion on stage.
Through this show, I have directed people from all walks of life - some who have never acted before and some who have decades of theatre training and experience. Our cast ranges in ages from under 1 year of age to upwards of 85. It is a directing experience you cannot find anywhere else.
The Canadian Badlands Passion Play is performed on the largest outdoor stage in North America, which is located in Drumheller, Alberta. This stage is an outdoor amphitheatre that is the size of six football fields (6.92 acres) and seats over 2000 audience members. Directing this production takes a lot of organization, planning, collaboration, and energy. I am so grateful to have been a part of the directing team that makes this show come to life!
