Twisted Tales:
Snow White
by Adam Furfaro
Role: Queen | Director: Mark Lewandowski | Company: Rosebud Theatre
This was my first theatre for young audiences show. It was so much fun. I played the evil queen, and I loved getting the children to really dislike me. The more convincing I was, the more engaged in the story they were. Just as you ride the wave of laughter from an audience, I rode the comments the children were saying to keep show's energy alive.
This character at first seemed superficially evil, but instead of playing her as a stereotypical evil queen, I dug into the reason as to why she was the way she was. It was fun to discover what was at stake for her when she is all of a sudden not the fairest of them all.
It said in the script that the King married her because she was the fairest in the land. Well, what happens if she loses that status? Will she lose her rank, royal title, wealth and perhaps the man she loves as well. Now the stakes were super high, and her jealousy towards Snow White became visceral. The Queen was a real person with fear driving her to do evil deeds, and that I could understand.
